The stairs run from Ord St. on the east side to Levant St. on the west side, and there are several lots along the Vulcan Street stairs with homes that front the stairs (meaning that the homes have no street access for a car). The Vulcan Stairs are one sweet spot we love in Corona Heights, a neighborhood with a reputation for its hills. It isn’t the only neighborhood in SF to have homes along a stairway, but these stairs are rather bucolic and lovely. Few cities have stairways as streets, which is one reason we find them so delightful.
While walking pretty much anywhere in Corona Heights is good exercise, this walk adds in some beautiful scenery along the way. Here’s a photo slideshow Matt took from a walk along the Vulcan stairway on a recent sunny winter day. Winter rains bring the vegetation across San Francisco back to a vibrant green, and this walk really captured that.
